Mythology tells that Mount Oita is the home of the hamadryades, the nymphs of oak and poplar trees; eight of them are daughters of the forest spirits Oxylos and Hamadryas, and the other, Dryope, was originally a Dryopian princess who was transformed into an hamadryad by the others.
